Phase field modeling of microstructure evolution

In this talk I will highlight a range of applications of phase field models in materials science and focus on two examples. Grain growth and microstructure evolution in irradiated materials. In the first example I will discuss the development of phase field models for grain growths in porous ceramics, model parameter determination and application of the model to porous ceramics. In the second example I will summatize our recent work on phase field modeling of void and gas bubble nucleation and growth in irradiated metals. The theoretical underpinning of the model, known as the sharp interface theory, will also be discussed in the case of void growths under irradiation.
